Facelift FAQ

As a person ages the, the effects of gravity and the to much exposure to the sun begin to show on the facial skin. Deep creases will begin to form on the forehead, mouth, around the eyes and skin will generally begin to look more tired.

A facelift can dramatically improve the aesthetics of these effects. Your skin will appear more tight , lines will be reduced and all in all you will look a few years younger after the procedure is complete.

A facelift should not make you look like a totally different person. As explained above it is merely to improve any effects that have taken place to the skin on your face.

Are you suitable for a face lift?

Anyone with skin that is showing early signs of sagging or some elasticity can be a candidate for a face lift. It is much better to go into get a consultation when you notice the early signs of skin sagging. This will enable you to counter the problem before it becomes more permanent in the skin. Most candidates that seek a facelift are in there 40’s.

If you are a smoker you will be asked to stop doing so, generally 4 weeks before surgery and for 4 weeks after. smoking can constrict blood vessels which will result in reduced healing.

You will also be asked about your general health.

Are there different types of face lifts?

Yes there are.

There is the classical skin only facelift. the SMAS facelift and also mini face lift techniques.

How long does a facelift last?

It is not possible to provide a general answer for this as every skin has different texture and skin quality. The quality of your skin tissue is what will determine how long you results last. the more elasticity your skin holds the longer your results will last. It is very important that you understand that a facelift will not stop the hands of time. You will continue to age, just with slightly less lines and wrinkles. Some people only get one facelift surgery, while others will want to get 1 7 to 15 years later again. Some people are a bit more obsessive and want even more than this.

In general though the effects of facial surgery are permanent, but in summary remember your skin will still age regardless.

What does the facelift surgery actually involve?

The incisions used for both women and men are the same.

What type of anaesthesia will be used and how long will the surgery take?

Most times the surgery will be performed under a full general anaesthetic, however, sometimes the surgery can be performed with a local anaesthetic. Most of the time the type of anaesthesia that will be performed will depend on weather you will be having work done to the eyes or brow area.

The longer your surgery will be the better it would be for you to be under a general anaesthetic. This will help against experiencing any discomforts that you would feel under a local anaesthetic.

What happens after you have received your face lift surgery?

After your facelift it is important that you understand that what you see may be a bit shocking, but this is all normal.

The bandages on your face will be fastened tight because of the tightness that will be in your muscles during surgery. Once these are removed, your face will still feel tight and will continue to do so over the following first few days, particularly as the swelling starts to set in place. As a result, you may feel that you are unable to open and close your mouth properly.

When you look in the mirror, you will be shocked that you don’t look any fresher than before. During this time, many patients actually hate both themselves and their surgeon for having done this, however, this is quite normal, and this will settle within the following next 2-3 weeks.

Once the bandages are removed, your hair will be washed carefully and then you may return home.

Over the next few days your hair should be washed daily with a gentle shampoo, and great care should be taken when doing this. After 6-7 days afterwards, you will return to the surgery and your progress will be assessed.

Will your facelift be painful? 

Because of the bandages that will be wrapped around your face you may experience a tight sensation in the face. This is likely to last for at least 10 days. It is worthy noting that a very small amount of patients actually experience any pain after there surgery takes place.
